Venice is the capital of the Veneto region of northern Italy. It is also known as "Queen of the Adriatic" and "City of Bridges" to many. The birth of Venice is traditionally assigned to 25th March 421 - this belief is however not supported by many. Built on one hundred and seventeen small islands, Venice has one hundred and fifty canals that are connected by four hundred and nine bridges.
Venice is world-famous for the canals. In the old center of Venice, the canals, serve like roads and all forms of transport is on water or on foot. While 19th century saw a causeway to the mainland bringing railway station to Venice, 20th century saw addition of an automobile causeway and parking lot.
Gondola, the classic Venetian boat is mostly used by tourists. The Venetians travel mostly by motorized waterbuses called 'vaporetti'. In addition, the city has many private boats called 'traghetti', which are common foot passenger ferries, and water taxis. Azienda Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano (ACTV), the public transport system includes both land transportation and water buses.
The city of Venice is always celebrating something or the other. Around Easter, during the month of April, this city becomes a busy vacation city. The Venice Art Biennale is one of the most important events of Venice. This event was inaugurated on April 22nd, 1894.
Late March into May is the best time to visit Venice. The other months include September and October.
