The beautiful city of Stockholm is situated on the south-central east coast of Sweden. Stockholm's significance not only lies in the fact that it is the capital and largest city of Sweden but it is also the site of the national Swedish government and the Swedish monarch's official residence. The importance of Stockholm in Sweden as the center of cultural, political and economic activities has remained from the 13th century.

The city

The city is built on islands and this feature has earned it the name "Venice of the North". It is a city with many beautiful buildings and architecture with historical importance. The city also boasts a number of water bodies and parks and is second most visited city in Nordic countries. That justifies the fact that it has around one million international tourists every year. Stockholm also has the largest shopping district in Scandinavia.

What the city offers

Stockholm has a vibrant art scene with internationally renowned art centers and commercial galleries. In fact, the emergence of a gallery district around Hudiksvallsgatan boasts renowned galleries like Milliken Gallery, Barnstorm and Stene. Not only things related to art, the city also boasts amusement parks like Grona Lund, on the island of Djurgarden and Stockholm Skansen - a zoo as well as a museum. The Stockholm football stadium and a multi-sport arena named Stockholm Globe Arena also features in the attractions list of the city. As far as cuisine is concerned, the city is dotted with restaurants, cafeterias and bars which serve a variety of food and drinks.

Museums

Stockholm holds a prominent place in the list of cities having the highest number of museums. Among them, the Museum of Modern Art needs special mention. The museum has works of famous modern artists like Picasso and Salvador Dali. Some other important museums are Skansen, which is an open-air museum was inaugurated in 1891. Another museum is the Nordic museum, dedicated to the cultural history and ethnography of Sweden. There are also many other museums you can visit in Stockholm city.

Other attractions

There are also a number of internationally eminent art galleries in the city like Andréhn-Schiptjenko and Brändström & Stene. Moreover, there has been an emergence of a gallery district around the Hudiksvallsgatan. Nordenhake, Milliken Gallery and Galleri Magnus Karlsson are some other important commercial art galleries of the city. The city has no dearth of options in case of theaters, cuisines and entertainment. As far as theatres are concerned, the Royal Dramatic Theater or the Royal Swedish Opera is there to entertain you. Gröna Lund is an amusement park that offers as many as 30 attractions and Kungsträdgården Park is really well known for the food it offers
