The beautiful city of Stockholm is situated on the south-central east coast of Sweden. Stockholm's significance not only lies in the fact that it is the capital and largest city of Sweden but it is also the site of the national Swedish government and the Swedish monarch's official residence. The importance of Stockholm in Sweden as the center of cultural, political and economic activities has remained from the 13th century.

The city

The city is built on islands and this feature has earned it the name "Venice of the North". It is a city with many beautiful buildings and architecture with historical importance. The city also boasts a number of water bodies and parks and is second most visited city in Nordic countries. That justifies the fact that it has around one million international tourists every year. Stockholm also has the largest shopping district in Scandinavia.

Stockholm has a vibrant art scene with internationally renowned art centers and commercial galleries. Museums

Stockholm holds a prominent place in the list of cities having the highest number of museums. Among them, the Museum of Modern Art needs special mention.
