Known as a lively center of commerce and culture, Leipzig is no doubt one of the most interesting cities in Germany. With its fascinating sights and sounds and rich history, Leipzig has become one of the country's most visited destinations. One of its foremost attractions is its musical tradition that is known worldwide. The city's most famous act, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, is a group that is always invited to play not just in Germany but in many other countries. The history of the orchestra began in 1743, when it performed the "Great Concert" in the Gewandhaus concert hall. Another pride of the city is Johann Sebastian Bach, an internationally renowned musician, who was a choirmaster in Leipzig between 1723 and 1750. He was more or less the musical director of the city during the time with his big role in the music of the church, town council and university. Other well-celebrated musical acts Leipzig include the St. Tomas' Boys Choir and Till Lindemann.
Of course, Leipzig is much more than a music hub. There is so much more to see in the city with its historically significant edifices like the St. Thomas Church, the City-Hochhaus Leipzig which is the city's tallest building, the Grassi Museum, and the Leipzig Botanical Garden which is the oldest botanical garden in the whole of Germany. If you like animals and wildlife, you can't miss dropping by the Leipzig Zoo, one of the largest and most popular zoos in Germany. Shopaholics will love the city center with its plethora of shops, malls and markets. Dining and nightlife in the city are vibrant scenes with the various restaurants, bars and clubs that offer something different to each and every traveler.
If there's one thing to say about Leizpig, it's that it's a city that loves to hold events and to celebrate. Every year, there are various happenings in the city and tourists who happen to be in town will surely enjoy. Among the popular city events are the A capella vocal music festival, Leipzig Book Fair which is the second largest German book fair, Jazztage contemporary jazz festival, and the Wave-Gotik-Treffen at Pentecost which is the world's largest goth or "dark culture" festival.
