Getting their name from the Old Sorbian Dreždany, which actually means the people of the riverside forest, Dresden is the capital city of Saxony, the German Federal Free State. Dresden is situated beside the River Elbe in a valley; the metropolitan section of the city Saxon Triangle houses the Dresden conurbation.
The city has been long furnished with cultural and artistic spectacle after being the capital and royal residence of the Kings of Saxony and the Electors for centuries. After the very much talked about allied aerial bonding upon the end of the second world war, the inner city was severely destructed. The effect of this bombing, four decades after in the German Democratic Republic and the contemporary success in city progression have already shifted the image of the city. Dresden was known to be the economic and cultural hub of the German Democratic Republic. In 1990, since the German Reunification, the city of Dresden again rose not only as the cultural and economic center of the eastern section of Germany, but also a political hub of the country.
Dresden is located mostly at the Valley Basin of the Dresden Elbe which further spans at the eastern Ore Mountains to the south, Lusatian granitic crust in the northern part and the Elbe Sandstone mountains to the east.
Other than its very good location and nice climate. Dresden is also known for its famous museums and art collections as well as its baroque-style architectures. It was all nicknamed as the Florence of the Elbe because of this. It is the fourth biggest urban district in Germany after Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin. This is primarily due to the unification of neighboring rural districts in the past six decades.
Dresden is a nature depot. It has lots of green areas. People that reside in the city claims that Dresden has got to be one of the greenest cities in the entire Europe. The parkways, parks and graveyards host loads and loads of monuments. Focused on conserving the Dresden cultural landscape, the Dresden Elbe Valley is now a world cultural heritage site.
Among the cities which are closest to Dresden are Chemnitz, Leipzig and German's capital city Berlin. It is also close to the Polish city of Wroclaw and the capital of Czech Republic, Prague.
